Secondary metabolites play an important role in plant resistance to insects. The monocyclic monoterpenes 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) and R-(+)-limonene have been considered economically important in this context. Cineole is a component of different species of Eucalyptus spp. and limonene is a constituent of Citrus spp. essential oils. These substances were bioassayed to determine possible fumigant, contact, and ingestion activity against Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), lesser grain borer, and Tribolium castancum (Herbst), red flour beetle, which are important pests of stored grain. It was possible to show that both compounds are insecticidal against the two insects, mainly in the contact and/or ingestion action. |

During 1993-1994, twenty maize genotypes (a mixture of hybrids and varieties) were evaluated in six counties of Piaui state in the northeast of Brazil. The objective was to study their adaptability, stability and yield. A complete randomized block design with three replications was used in the trials. The genotypes showed significant differences in all localities. Joint statistical analysis showed significant differences due to genotypes, locations and genotype x location interactions. Yields ranged from 4.7 kg/ha to 7.2 kg/ha (an overall average of 6.1 kg/ha), with hybrids producing higher yields than varieties in general. Hybrids AG510, Pioneer 3210, Cargill 805 and AG106 had above-average yields, good adaptability and predictable behaviour in all locations. The best varieties were CMS39, BR106 and BR5011, all with good adaptability and high stability in all the six environments. |
